A rediculous scenario that ordinary teachers face. How do they get to effective PD at effective and inspirational face to face events - based on pedagogy - not didactic skill training?
If the event costs say $500.00, after the casual and travel, this is $1000.00. If the school does have the money, then it doesn’t happen — the kicker is of course that when it is your own system charging that - to themselves - Brain-missing logic. Don’t hold PD in fancy venues, run by profit driven event management outfits.
Don’t spend $40,000 importing people, before you first sample home talent. Don’t kick up a couple of killer keynotes, and then resort to workshops that don’t blow minds, but teach proccedural skills.
Most of all, if people attending are not connected on a sustained and purposeful level. It is just a show. One person returning to school cannot possibly replicate what they saw.
Hold it locally, allow locals to lead discussions and allow locals to participate in ongoing mentoring and support. Just record the keynote and stick it on the cloud. Then organise a later back channel discussion - online. Learn from K12 online - think global — shop local - act local and fund people to do what you’re currently spanking them for. You can only employ locals to teach local students!
The biggest what-the? for me is flying executives interstate for a 2 hour meeting to decide what everyone else should be doing. Clearly these people have Authority.
